Bedtime Books for Babies and Toddlers

Bedtime Books for Babies and Toddlers

A baby bedtime book should end on a picture of someone asleep, or on a hug. If the last page invites a game, you will be reading it twice and nobody will be closer to sleep.

Goodnight Gorilla and Kiss Good Night do this well. The Napping House builds a pile of sleepers and then wakes them, so read it early in the routine, not as the final book. Pajama Time! and Snuggle Puppy! are the wiggly ones. Use them while pajamas are going on, then switch to the quieter story.

Ten Minutes till Bedtime is funny about stalling. A toddler who is already stalling may not need the idea. Save it for a night when the joke will help instead of adding another delay.

Same book, same chair, most nights. At this age the repetition is the routine.

Sit in the same chair. Use the same voice. A baby does not need a new plot every night, and a book they already know is easier to fall asleep inside.

Goodnight Gorilla

Goodnight Gorilla

by Peggy Rathmann

The zookeeper says good night, and the gorilla lets everyone out so they can follow him to the keeper's bed. You can whisper it. The mice in the corners give a wide-awake toddler something to find without starting a new story. Find the mouse, whisper good night, and close the book.

Pajama Time!

Pajama Time!

by Sandra Boynton

Animals put on pajamas, dance, and then settle. The rhyme is bouncy, so it fits the getting-dressed part of bedtime better than the lights-out part. When the dance is over, switch to a slower book. Pajamas first, dancing second, then a quieter story once the animals have settled.

Kiss Good Night

Kiss Good Night

by Amy Hest

Mrs. Bear puts Sam to bed, and Sam keeps asking for one more kiss while the rain falls outside. The delay is gentle, and the kisses have a number. A useful book if your child is already running the one-more-kiss routine. Count the kisses. When the number is done, so is the book.

Ten Minutes till Bedtime

Ten Minutes till Bedtime

by Peggy Rathmann

A boy has ten minutes until bed, and a crowd of hamsters arrives for a tour of his bedtime. The pictures are busy and the countdown is the joke. Funny, and a little exciting. Read it before the last, quieter story. The hamsters are funny, and then they have to leave.

The Napping House

The Napping House

by Audrey Wood

A granny, a child, a dog, a cat, and a mouse pile onto one bed until a flea wakes everybody up. The house gets louder and then calm again. Because it wakes up at the end, use it earlier in the evening. The pile is cozy until the flea. Do not make this the last book.

Snuggle Puppy!

Snuggle Puppy!

by Sandra Boynton

A parent sings a short love song to a puppy, with a kiss in the middle. It takes about a minute. Good as the last thing you do with the book closed, when the actual snuggle is what you wanted anyway. One song, one kiss, lights down. It is over before a toddler can ask for another plot.
